New Battle Card - Inferior

Post by RogerCooper » Sat Mar 23, 2024 12:14 pm

Inferior (Stand)

Cost
-1 Points

Game Play
Stands with this battle card have a -1 tactical factor in close combat. Ranged combat is unaffected.

Historical Background
Stands with this battle card are deficient in morale, training, equipment or numbers compared to normal units of this type. This can also represent forces which are fatigued or otherwise physically impaired. A good historical example would be most of the Persians at Arbela, where the Persians had stayed up for fear of a night attack. The newly-raised legions of the Roman civil wars could be Heavy Foot with the Inferior battle card.

Hey Roger,

We actually had a battle card like this at one point during our development of battle cards, but we discarded the notion. Causes too much overlap between otherwise similar types. Overlap between types (where there are multiple ways you can reach what is essentially the same troop category, but for different cost) is a recipe for min-maxing. We left in Deadly because it allows for expansion beyond the regular types (i.e., things like Elite Foot Deadly), but it still causes some issues when players experiment with adding Deadly to small-value troop types, causing overlap with the medium-value ones. That problem was largely fixed by increasing the cost of Deadly (at one point in development it was just +1 pt).

If you want to have poor Heavy Foot, you can get there with Horde with Fast.

People who want to minmax should play a different game. Any build-a-unit system is going give you the opportunity to minmax. Players should not have a Pavisier with Brittle, Slow & Fierce that would cost only 1 point.

Have I missed something? Are all the Fantasy cards suddenly usable in regular Triumph?

I hope not.

Not in tournament, where things need to be stricter for balanced play. But in casual play, you can mix Standard Triumph and Fantasy Triumph quite easily. Many fantasy battle cards can make sense in historical situations. If you recreating a historical battle, you may need to create your own special rules/battlecards to handle the situation.
