...large parts of northern Germany were inhabited by Slavs who did not allow themselves to be Christianized by Charlemagne. There are 2 rival groups; Abodrites and Wilzen(Veleti). During the Saxon Wars, Charlemagne was supported by the Abodrites, but the Saxons by the Wilzen. Charlemagne called for the Wilzen campaign in 798.
