A nice repurposing of an abandoned project Paul.

This tower will serve as a Triumph! camp representing Dol Guldur, the Necromancer's Tower located on the southern edge of Mirkwood. It is a $5 wooden lighthouse model from Hobby Lobby with the railings removed, the cupola shifted off-center, and a small tower added.

The small tower is a piece from the old Airfix "Robin Hood Castle" set from the 1970s. It was broken up and missing parts when I got it so I don't feel bad about using it for other projects.* The irregular cobblestone texture was done with a piece of vinyl cobblestone road from a Christmas village set that I dipped in light grey paint and used as a stamp. The elaborate round window is a fancy button that happened to fit in the hole of the original birdhouse.

*The Airfix Castle sets - they also made a Roman mile fort and a French Foreign Legion fort - are collectors items now and super expensive.

Trivia: This model is about ten years old and originally served as the Wizard's Tower when we played a miniatures-based version of Tower of Zenopus from the original Dungeons and Dragons Blue Book by John Eric Holmes.

Very imaginative work Paul. I like the asymmetrical look the repurposed turret provides.

Paul,

Just caught up on all the posts over the summer. Any progress in September?

I’m looking forward particularly to how the 6 player campaign goes. I have a notion to imitate your project using our 28mm Thistle & Rose Fantasy figures. It would make a great convention game for us to put on and show off our figures!

Real life has intruded on my painting time since Historicon, but I do have some progress. I should post my army of Rohan here, and I have the forces of Moria halfway done.

I have some “Hill Trolls of Gorgoroth” nearly ready too…some of those excellent Vendel figures which are perfect for 15mm. Just like in the books; covered in scales and wielding hammers. No conversions needed at all!

Some ruins to represent Osgiliath. I think I will make a few more like this; everything needs to be kept small in order to fit Middle Earth on the table but these look a little too small. Built with foam core, cat litter, wooden dowel, and some balsa in an hour or two. Not award winning modeling but should like OK on the table.

The little strip of felt is there to better show how the terrain will look on the table.

Some casualties are laying about the ruins, one more obvious than the other!

Despite having a small footprint Paul, the ruins are quite effective and are strongly suggestive of Osgoliath.

Thanks all for the positive feedback. I am making progress slowly!

Next up are some eagles, bats, and ravens.

Image

The eagles will be reinforcements that are activated by card draw in the campaign game. They are classified as Knights with the Flying battle card.

Image

The bats are Flying Rabble with the Terror battle card. They are part of the small contingent of troops that start at Dol Guldur.

Image

The ravens are Rabble with the Flying card and are activated by card draw like the eagles. I think they could be used by either side if they draw the Ravens campaign card, or by the Forces of the West if they draw Radagast the Brown.
