TRIUMPH! Events at Historicon 2019!

Post by David Kuijt » Wed Apr 03, 2019 1:02 am

Greetings, fellow travelers.

Here is the tentative schedule of events for Historicon 2019.

If you want to run a Triumph! event, please get in touch with us -- Historicon has a large enough population of Triumph! players that in previous years we've had no trouble running more than one event in a single timeslot.

Spencer, as always, we appreciate your willingness to run a pre-convention event (Wednesday evening, in this case) -- please let us know what time you would like to start it, and what Theme you are interested in running this time.

Here's the schedule:
  • Wednesday
    • Evening: Spencer Themed Event
  • Thursday
    • Morning: Epic Conflicts of History Walkup Event
    • Afternoon: Battle of the Five Armies
    • Evening: 15mm Open Tournament
  • Friday
    • Morning: Epic Conflicts of History Walkup Event
    • Afternoon: Battle of the Five Armies
    • Evening: Burning Sun; Bloody Sand Chariot Era Scenarios
  • Saturday
    • Morning: Epic Conflicts of History Walkup Event
    • Afternoon: Burning Sun; Bloody Sand Chariot Era Scenarios
    • Evening: Bronze Age Chariot Megatheme
Event Descriptions:

Spencer Themed Event: [to be determined]

Epic Conflicts of History Walkup Event: the traditional demo set we've run for several years now; walk up and play some battles. As always, demo armies supplied through the kindness of Thistle and Rose miniatures (Bill Hupp and Brian Caskey).

15mm Open Tournament: Bring your own legal Triumph! army, any time period, any geographic locality. Open tournament -- bring whatever you like, and play against other people doing the same.

Battle of the Five Armies: come fight in one of the critical battles of the Third Age, where Dwarves, Men, and Elves are attacked by a huge force of Wargs and Goblins. Fought in glorious 28mm; all armies supplied. 8 players; 3 hours. This is intended to be a spectacular event, overshadowing my earlier effort of several hundred hours creating Minas Tirith for the Battle of the Pelennor Field. This battle will be run twice, on Thursday and Friday afternoons.

Burning Sun; Bloody Sand. Chariot Era Scenario Event. If you've never played in a Two Davids Scenario Event, you're in for a treat. There will be nine or ten preset historical scenarios (all armies, terrain, and deployment set in advance); players will cycle through playing different battles against different opponents every round. Best score after three rounds (possibly four, time permitting) wins. This event will be run twice, on Friday Evening and on Saturday Afternoon -- if you want to try most of the scenarios, you will need to sign up for the event twice. Current tentative list of historical battles includes:
  • Dawn of Chariots: Gilgamesh Era Sumerians vs. Zagros Highlanders
  • Third Cataract of the Nile: Middle Kingdom Egyptian vs. Early Nubians
  • Fall of Knossos: Minoan vs. Mycenaeans
  • Qadesh: New Kingdom Egyptian vs. Hittite Empire
  • Fields of Per-Yer: Nine Bows Libyan (with Sea People ally) vs. New Kingdom Egyptian
  • Battle of the Delta: New Kingdom Egyptian vs. Sea Peoples
  • Southern Crusade: Kushite Egyptian vs. Libyan Egyptian
  • Battle of Jerusalem: Kushite Egyptian vs. Assyrian, 700 BC
  • Rebellious Vassals: Saitic Egyptian vs. Assyrian
  • Fall of Nineveh: Assyrian vs. Medes, 612 BC
In addition to the above tentative list, other possibilities (meaning we have the armies for them mostly made up) are:
  • Hittites vs. Sea Peoples
  • Hittites vs. Biblical Syrian
  • NKE vs Syro-Canaanites
  • Assyrian vs. Neo-Babylonian
  • other Assyrian possibilities
  • Hittites vs. Mitanni
Scenario work is in process; this means that the tentative list above is going to evolve. If you have any loaners that cover the period above that you'd be willing to loan out, please contact DK.

Bronze Age Chariot Megatheme: this is a simple Theme event -- bring your own army, anything from the Cradle of Civilization or Eastern Mediterranean from 3000 BC until the Fall of Assyria 612 BC. We will have loaners if you want to participate but don't have an army of your own. Four or five rounds, depending upon number of participants; starting at 7pm on Saturday.

Glad to see the scenario event making a comeback.

I do think that is a particularly good hisrtorical immersion event.

David, are you going to publish these scenarios like you did with "The Embattled Isle"?

Cheers,

In the fullness of time, we will have on the order of five or six scenario books. They were nearly complete four or five years ago; they're waiting on the publication of the Triumph print rules before we have time to revisit them. They're less complete now -- they need to be retooled to fit the changes to Triumph that happened 3 and 4 years ago (map size, warband/raider change of 3 years ago, a couple of other things) plus we want to have nicer looking print maps.

There is some discussion on Fbook of the possibility of running a Grand Triumph Doubles tournament, possibly on Saturday. We have enough interest that the event will probably succeed, but we'd like to gauge an approximation of how many teams we would expect. People who are solidly interested, please respond here to let us know.

For those who haven't played GT Doubles before, you find a partner and the two of you play a GT army, splitting up the commands between you as you wish. Rounds are usually 2.5 or 3 hours, so the time commitment is more significant than playing in a normal Triumph tournament.

Rod and I are definitely in. My favorite event by far.

Loanwarrior -- sorry, I don't know who you are? (at a guess, you might be William Robinson or Tim Hladon -- the other two candidates for playing Grand Triumph doubles with their wife have names I recognize on this forum)

Thanks for the swift response David. I look forward to purchasing the finished publications.
