Now Available - July Update to Triumph Early Access Edition

Post by David Schlanger » Mon Jul 03, 2017 2:55 pm

The July update of the Triumph Early Access Edition is now available on Wargame Vault. This is a free download for everyone who purchased the earlier version.

We hope you enjoy it! We'll be checking this forum to answer any questions you might have.

This is the version of the rules that will be used at Historicon this month.

The July 2017 update includes the following changes to the Triumph Rules document:

UPDATED FORMAT
The format of the rules has been improved to significantly enhance readability. The text is now in a serifed font for better readability, while article headings are in an alternate font and color so they really standout.

MINOR RULES CHANGES
Dicing For Terrain Pieces. Modified the process to use 2D6 (each player rolls one die) instead of 1D6. Includes an adjusted lookup table.
Flank March. Troop placement is modified to allow open order foot to be placed in difficult terrain.
Zone of Control. A stand starting in the ZOC of an enemy stand has the option to align and then move backwards (in addition to the other options).
Rear Support. Warriors receive a 1 for rear support (instead of a 2).
Shattered Outcomes.
- Raiders are no longer shattered by Warriors or Warband.
- Elephants are now shattered by Raiders.
Evade Outcome. Horse Bow, Battle Taxi, and Chariots evade Artillery when doubled (instead of being destroyed).
Troop Cost. Warband now cost 3 points per stand (instead of 4 points per stand).

REWORDING AND CLARIFICATION
Added a table with standard game board sizes.
Improved presentation of terrain piece sizes.
Highlighted importance of front contact, flank contact, and rear contact terminology in the rules.
Clarified presentation of command distance rules, including a new diagram.
Clarified rules for wheeling a column.
Clarified rules for conforming when contacted by an enemy group.
Added diagrams for restrictions on moving into flank contact and rear contact.
Clarified rules for multiple stands shooting at the same target.
Clarified rules for shooting at the rear, including a new diagram.
Clarified rules for close combat match-ups; in particular emphasized that stands in mutual front contact must fight each other

QUICK REFERENCE SHEETS
Updated to relect minor rules changes noted above.

This looked weird, but looking at the QRS it seems that Warband (and Spears) lost rear support entirely?

Yes.

Epaminondas style Hoplite rear support still exists where appropriate in the army lists as a Battle Card, but we had missed the fact that all such Hoplites were now rated as Heavy Foot, or in rare cases Elite Foot. Now fixed.

Warrior went down from +2 rear support to +1.

Warband went down from +1 rear support to <none>. And got moved down to 3pts.

The new version is much easier on my eyes. Thanks for all of the effort on this latest update.

Thanks. I did think Gauls, Britons, etc seemed too good against legionaries before, so this seems like an improvement.

I might be missing something, but do large terrain pieces now only count as 1 piece rather than 2 when setting terrain?

See 15.3 and 23.5. Evidently pieces are now small or large and no more than half the pieces selected may be large.

That's correct, Scott. The idea (large count as 2) seemed good in theory but the results were people clearing the board (as it were) by taking fewer larger pieces. Since pieces 1 and 2 are rarely in the center, careful management of taking large pieces made it too easy to get a pool(ish) table. Fixed now.
