Syracusan vs Early Carthaginians (15mmm big bases)

Post by Roundie » Sun Dec 27, 2020 1:55 am

Merry Christmas everyone

On the 30th Dec the lads are coming out to my place for our 1st big triumph gaming day (well 6 of us....so not that big really)

We are basing the day on the Rise of Rome lists and with that in mined I thought I'd try out a few list before hand.

The attached pictures are as the title suggests Syracusan vs Early Carthaginians.

In brief The Carthy Cavalry monstered the Greek Cavalry on the right but, was then checked by the Greek Arty.
In the middle both sides weren't keen to get stuck in until the near the end of the game.
On the left flank, Ligurians & rabble beat up the Oscan's winning the game for Carthage

I love the look of the 15mm Chariots on the 80mm bases!

Well the lads came over yesterday and we spent the day gaming.

There was five of us in the end

2x Carthaginian armies
1x Massilian
1x Late Bosporan (with Roman allies)
1x Syracusan

All in all it was a great day BBQ,Beers and ancients. No pictures sorry as I was lost in the games and forgot to take any lol.

Hello Everyone

Myself and eldest son attended the gaming day at Roundie's, lots of fun and great games. I'm one of those sort of fellas that throws an extrodinary amount of 1's whether in combat or command PIPS especially at a critical moment in the game when all the odds are stacked in your favour and out pops a 1 !!!
Roundie introduced me to Triumph after having played AdG for a couple of years and I am absolutely loving the rules, ease of a lot of things, speedy games. So much so I have rebased my Carthaginians to match Roundie's big bases which I must admit does look really good. The table with nice terrain and masses of troops on the table, a bunch of hairy warriors looks like a bunch of warriors!
I have a Greek army which I'm going to rebase for Triumph only because they can actually win games depending on who and what you come up against compared to other rule sets where they will be out manuevored and shot out of a game.
So great set of rules for us simple minded folk.

Cheers Rob

Welcome Rob, your description is exactly what Triumph is supposed to be.

And yes the big bases look great!

Inspired by these bases!
Do you have a rough rule of thumb of figs for each kind of base?
I was thinking this:
Heavy infantry: 14
Medium infantry: 12
Light infantry: 10
Skirmishers: 8

Light horse: 6
Hav cav / elite horse: 8
Catephracts: 10

Minor quibble -- what is medium infantry in Triumph? Heavy Foot is close order infantry and is often in the same equipment as Elite Foot or Spear.

When I was doing 6mm figs on 40mm bases (same principles as 15mm figs on 80mm bases) my rule of thumb was having two lines of close order foot (or more if you could, like with Pike or Pavise or Horde), and to make sure that the open order troops were obviously open order (no lines). But the main thing for me was the artistic composition :)
