Orcs and Gobln infighting

Post by Bill Hupp » Fri Feb 21, 2020 3:34 am

I ran across this interesting article. It seems a good idea to have a Quarrelling Orcs rule: "all Orcs / Man-Orcs / Uruks will quarrel among themselves."

The older rules suggested that each turn there was a 1 in 6 chance of it happening. Seems like every time Orcs and Goblin units move next to other units a fight might break out. Would one unit flank the other or maybe both turn to fight and you could roll like a normal combat?

Could also call it Orc Animosity Rule.

That's a rule for a skirmish game, it seems to me.

The only way you get multiple different tribes of orcs and goblins into a battle against an enemy is if there is a powerful and feared leader who doesn't mind killing lots of underlings to enforce discipline. And lots of NCOs with the same attitude (where there's a whip, there's a way...).

So until and unless the Witch King, Mouth of Sauron, Azog, Bolg, or whoever is killed, I don't think the army would suddenly attack itself. Sure, lots of individual orcs would do that -- but not whole army units. So it seems like a cool rule -- for a skirmish game.

True, it is more of a micro aspect and you could presume lower ratings would cover the hassle and killing (and eating) of Orc discipline.

But it would be cool if it was an additional management issue for General Orcdude and a game narrative item for where it happens in the game.
