My brother recently gave me some "Der Kriegspielers Fantastiques" miniatures that I had painted 50 years ago! There were four "Citadel Guardsmen" and an orc. The orc I believe is by Heritage. They were battered and about to lose their weapons and ankles if they got bent one more time. Here they are in their "painted by an 11-year-old" glory:

Image

The orc was repaired and improved with some green stuff along with two of the Guardsmen. They are mounted to be used as Heroes in some future Triumph! army. But what to do with the two other Guardsmen with swords?

Image

I wanted to put all these figures to use, so it came to me the two extra swordsmen could be used as terrain pieces for my Lord of the Rings game. So here they are as the Argonath, the giant Pillars of the Kings that stood on either side of the river Anduin.

Image

They really should have one hand raised in a gesture of warning and an axe in the other hand according to the book, but close enough.

Black base coat, then drybrush dark brown, medium, brown, grey, light grey

Image

Hills made of a base of floor tile, carved insulation foam, a few rocks, and the ballast mix I use for basing.

Image

Pay no attention to those giant trees in the background!

Image

These are really quite small, but I am keeping all the terrain pieces and camps on a small footprint so that there is plenty of open space on the board for maneuver and combat.

These troops represent the forces of both Mirkwood and Lothlorien. The two armies can also combine into a standard army for regular Fantasy Triumph! games. I used Old Glory brand late Romans for the infantry and Armenian/Parthian Cavalry for the Elite Cavalry.

Lothlorien

1 x Elite Cavalry
2 x Elite Foot (+Hearten)
2 x Archers (+Marksman)

Mirkwood
Image1 x Horse Bow (+Terrain Affinity - Woods)
3 x Light Spear (+Fast)
2 x Archers (+Fast)

And here they are in battle against some forces of evil from Dol Guldur!

Thanks for the positive feedback! I tried to make the figures look more "Elvish" by the choice of colors and base covering. I think of the elves as being near the end of their time on Middle Earth, so I used some "Autumn" flock. The wood elves are all in shades of green and have modified helmets to make them look a little less Roman. I picked a purple-blue and burnt orange for the Lothlorien elves to give them a "sunset/twilight" kind of look. I have some Fall trees on individual bases to add to the areas near the two Elf camps.

I was going to use some converted Norman Knights for the Elite Cavalry stand but they looked too ordinary.

I built a Minas Tirith model using a wooden birdhouse, an aquarium decoration tower, and towers from a broken Airfix Robin Hood castle kit from the 1960s. The problem is that it didn't match the look of the other terrain - Orthanc and Barad Dur were made by the same builders (in the book) and have a very smooth and simple look. I tried smoothing out the stone work using some moulding paste Paul Potter recommended but it still looked wrong. So Minas Tirith got repainted as a decayed castle and I think it looks just right for that part. Perhaps a camp for an undead army.

Minas Tirith 2.0 was made using wooden shapes, just like my Orthanc and Barad Dur were made. In this case they were castle blocks. Details were added using balsa and plastic styrene strips. It was painted with spray paints then the details were painted, in some cases while the spray paint was still drying because I don't have enough patience to wait until the next day like I should.

On the Desk

It looks OK on the Desk but lets see what it will look like on the table....

On the Table

I put it on the table and think it will work at arms length, except for the roof tops. They look too much like toy pieces, so some weathering or painting on roof tiles is still needed.

The roofs were painted with silver, blue, and copper to give them texture. Denethor on the balcony is a converted Battle Valor figure. This is the final product.

The army of Minas Tirith advances as the darkness of Mordor envelops the city.
