15mm Tang Chinese Camp

Post by Texus Maximus » Tue Mar 10, 2026 2:15 am

The Mogao Caves or “Thousand Buddha Grottoes” in Dunhuang, China are filled with religious art but also a remarkable mural of "Zhang Yichao’s Victory Procession". This mural from cave #156, painted during the Late Tang Dynasty in about 860 AD, celebrates the victory of Zhang Yichao over the Tibetans. It depicts the general himself in a red robe riding a white horse. There are many mounted troops in the procession, carrying flags or blowing trumpets. The most distinctive flag is semi-circular with black and white trim around an orange field. There is a teal blue spot in the center.

Angus McBride's Version

There is a Montvert Publications book “The Army of Tang China” (1995), authored by Karl Ranitzsch, that contains this excellent version of the mural done by Angus McBride. I recommend this reference for anyone planning to build a Tang army.

Figure Sources

The mounted figures are from Outpost, except for the General who is from Viking Forge. The horses are from Old Glory. Viking Forge has a range of 15mm Tang Chinese that is worth checking out; that general is a great sculpt.
