I try to keep my terrain lightweight, minimum bulk, and flat as possible for storage. This eases the load on my old back, reduces figures falling off hills, and stores better.
I have for a time cut terrain out of old DBM mat felt offcuts. I've tried over-painting a few with contours for a 3d height effect, and the dune with flour mix glued on with pva and over varnished. (These depicted are only one level high with the painting creating some illusion of height effect. However I can always add further levels onto the base ones.)
Never ending need for creativity, this hobby!
