These dunes were made from a set of plastic moulded dunes sold by ”Amera”. The mouldings were glued to pieces of MDF to give them some weight and stability. I used Liquitex coarse texture gel to cover it. I have included a photo of the small dune after this step.
The dunes were then painted earth brown, then dry brushed a coffee color, then dry brushed a sand color. The color looks off in the photos to me; they are actually a nice “playground sand” color. A stand of 15mm Midianites is included to show scale. Stands of troops will stay in place on most of the dune areas; I think the coarse texture provides some grip.

Re: Dunes
Adding a drybrush of “caramel corn” color along the edges seems to blend it in better with my Dry terrain mat. The mat is wool felt “haybale” color from Prairie Woolens.

Re: Dunes
Most interesting to see this post. Thanks for the pics of the dunes.
I'm working on a Parthian army with one stand of armored camels, so I want to create a couple of 'dune' terrain pieces. I'm thinking that a smooth surface of fine granules with a 'wavy' appearance would be appropriate and look 'dune-like' more than hill-like. Thoughts? Helpful advice? This is all drifting sand to me.

Re: Dunes
I actually abandoned these dunes for a different idea a few years back. It was too hard to get troops into any semblance of a line because the dunes were just too high.
My current solution is a patch of sand-colored terrain. Dunes don't give an uphill advantage but do block line of sight, so pieces of rough desert terrain are scattered on top to give it some height. They can be easily moved aside when troops enter the terrain.

Another idea would be to substitute several very small wavy or crescent-shaped pieces of sandy terrain for the rocky/brush-covered pieces I use. That way it would look more like a dune but retain the same ease of play.
