The Mitanni were a people of Hurrian origin who established a kingdom in northern Mesopotamia in about 1500 BC. It was a feudal state led by a chariot-riding warrior nobility. At the height of its power, Mitanni was a rival with the other great states of that region - the Hittites and the Egyptians.

This 15mm army is notable for the high number of Chariot elements. These are supported by Light Foot and Horde.

In Triumph! terms, it has eight Chariot elements, three Light Foot, and two Horde. I also used the Supporting Bowmen battle card.

Chariots. These chariot models are by Gladiator and used without modification. The chariot bodies have four-spoked wheels, along with bow cases and quivers of arrows mounted on the sides. They look very close to the Angus McBride illustration of a chariot with six-spoked wheels from the Osprey books. Mitanni chariots could have four, six, or eight spokes so the wheels are accurate. The drivers have shields with simple geometric designs. The warriors are well-equipped with scale armor which closely matches the illustrations in Wargames Research Groups “Armies of the Ancient Near East”.

Light Foot. These infantry are supported by bowmen, so a crouching archer has been added to show the use of the battle card. We don’t know much about about Mitanni infantry, except that they were equipped with swords or dirks and wore leather helmets. (Gabriel, 2007). The figures are wearing colorful patterned kilts that are suitable for similar Mesopotanian cultures. They are carrying Hittite-style helmets and shields because Hittite and Mitanni culture were known to influence one another. The light foot are by Old Glory and the archers are from Donnington.

Horde. The hordes of subject people are Eureka Mound Builder figures used with no modifications, led by command figures from the Old Glory “Syrian City States” set.
