The Midianites were a nomadic tribe of people in the Bible who lived in the northwestern Arabian Peninsula, east of the Gulf of Aqaba. They also had a presence in Jordan and Canaan. They were known as pastoralists, caravan traders, and bandits. They were also akin to the Israelites; in fact Moses married Zipporah, a Midianite woman and daughter of the Midianite priest Jethro. In Triumph!, the Midianite armies have large numbers of camel-mounted warriors supported by poorly armed but mobile Infantry. This version has six stands of Bad Horse with the Light Camel battle card, six stands of Light Foot, and four Skirmishers.
Here is the army arrayed:
The Camel-mounted figures are mostly by Essex, who offer two different packs (one of warriors, and one command) of camel-mounted Midianites. There are several conversions, including the general who is wearing bronze scale armor and a helmet. His top half is an Old Glory Syrian City-States general. There are two Peter Pig Midianite figures mixed in - in this case they match well in size and style to the Essex figures.
The Light Foot are mostly Old Glory brand "Amorite" figures. The cast spears were replaced with straight pins and some shields and swords added for variety; there are only three poses in the Amorite pack. The intent was to keep their clothing and equipment to the bare minimum like the camel-mounted warriors.
The skirmishers are Old Glory Amorites.
They are described as pastoralists, traders, and “prone to hit and run raids in search of easy plunder and captives” (Armies of the Ancient Near East, WRG, 1984). So I created these figures for decoration on the battlefield, showing two Midianites bringing back a load of stolen goods:
The pack Camel is a Stone Mountain brand figure I have had for about 40 years and finally put to use.
