What are These?

I'm going through some old stuff and found these. I want to paint them but don't know what they are.

The dudes with the axes I'm guessing are Byzantine, early dark ages, that general time frame but that's just a guess.

The dudes with the spears I'm not sure of. Babylonian? That seems really early.

Both should be easy to identify because the shields are so distinctive; however, try as I might I can't figure out what they are.

Any guesses are welcome.

The spearmen might be New Kingdom Egyptians. They're similar to Chariot's ENK2 Egyptian Spearmen (as in, one suspects they may be based on the same WRG illustration :P ).

The axemen might perhaps be meant to be Neo-Assyrians. The shield shape fits, and some reconstructions show Assyrian infantry in knee-length or longer scale armour coats* - tho the figures seem to be wearing lamellar?

* I confess to some skepticism - it must be ungodly tiring to walk in such. One wonders if they might be based on reliefs that actually show dismounted charioteers?
