15mm Early Emishi

Early Emishi Army

500 AD to 699 AD

The Emishi were a tribal people who lived in the northern regions of Honshu, the main Japanese island. They were likely descended from the Jomon people, and may have been related to the Ainu. They are described in the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan) in vivid terms:

"Amongst these Eastern savages the Yemishi are the most powerful...Their clothing consists of furs, and they drink blood. Brothers are suspicious of one another. In ascending mountains, they are like flying birds; in going through the grass, they are like fleet quadrupeds...Therefore, they keep arrows in their top-knots and carry swords within their clothing. Sometimes, they draw together their fellows and make inroads on the frontier. At other times, they take the opportunity of the harvest to plunder the people. If attacked, they conceal themselves in the herbage; if pursued, they flee into the mountains..."

An old (possibly contemporary) illustration shows them with shaggy beards and hair. They are wearing tunics with medium length sleeves with a sleeveless fur vest that goes down past their hips. Most of the warriors in this army are dressed like this. A few are nude or just wearing a simple kilt or loincloth, and a few more are wearing long-sleeved robes with bold patterns on the edges like the Ainu.

The army list is very simple: twelve archers or skirmishers or a combination. I opted for nine stands of Archers and four Skirmishers.

The figures in conventional Emishi garb are from Khurasan. The ones in Ainu clothing are converted Arabs from Donnington. The lightly clad and nude ones are from Gladiator. The command stand is a real variety: the youth on the left is from Donnington, the general is an Old Glory figure, the standard bearer is a converted Splintered Light figure, and the archer on the right is from Khurasan.
