Oceanic lists

Post by Andreas Johansson » Fri Dec 13, 2019 6:52 am

Oceania is covered by the following lists:

Maori 1100 to 1785 AD
Fiji, Samoa, or Tonga 1100 to 1785 AD
Hawaii 1100 to 1785 AD
Polynesian or Melanesian 1100 to 1785 AD
Other Melanesian 1100 to 1785 AD

The "Polynesian and Melanesian" list presumably covers all Polynesians except those of New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, and Hawaii (well, at least those with populations large enough to raise something that may be considered armies); but which Melanesians is it supposed to cover as opposed to the "Other Melanesian" list?

Also, do the "Polynesian and Melanesian" have it's troop options switched about with the "Hawaii" one or something? The former, only, has the Papa-kaua pikemen, which I understand to have been a Hawaiian specialty.

Another thought: given your highly inclusive approach, maybe you'd want some sort of Micronesian list? Palau at least seems to have seen relatively large-scale warfare in the medieval period.

This seems to've been cleaned up, and the "Polynesian or Melanesian" list renamed to simply "Polynesian".

It would perhaps be better as "Other Polynesian", to parallel the "Other Melanesian" list, and the better to alert people to the fact it doesn't cover all of Polynesia.

The sum total, BTW, of my knowledge of medieval Palauan warfare comes from Kirch's On the Road of the Winds, which is warmly recommended to anyone interested in the Prehistory of the Pacific.
