There is a large differenze in the list of the Sarmates and Alans.Both are the same people. The Alans wre reportet to be the most eastern tribe. So the Alans were the first sarmatic tribe subdued by the Huns. But before in 135AD they made the first experiences with the western civilisation raiding Media and Armenia. But they were repulsed raiding Cappadocia by the roman governor Lucius Flavius Arrianus. He describe them as lancers like other Samatians but riding unprotected horses. The service in the hunic army had to be as lancers as the Huns did fight as horse archers. The Alans did also fight in the Battle of Catalaunian Fields in 451AD under king Sangiban on the roman side.
