What Armies Are Dominating After A Decade of Triumph!?
In the 1980's as a young guy, I played in many WRG and DBM tournaments where several armies dominated: Late Imperial Roman, English 100 Year War, Assyrians, Seleucids, Byzantines, even Aztecs. Now as a gray beard in the 2020's, I'm a Triumph! addict inching into Triumph! competitions at gaming cons, stores, and homes. My question: Which Meshwesh armies do you see dominating? With Triumph!'s move away from weapon significance, regular vs irregular troops, and morale classifications, what armies lists have surfaced in Triumph's first ten years as the hardest to oppose? In my own very limited experience, I'm seeing a couple of repeats from the 1980's--English 100 Year War and Seleucids. What armies do you fear to face? What armies to you field yourself in tournaments? For me, I've become a fan of Later Greco-Bactrians with their phalanx, elephant, shooting bows, and cataphracts. A bit of all the good stuff rolled into one army. How about you?
Re: What Armies Are Dominating After A Decade of Triumph!?
I think this was part of a lively discussion on FB. The short answer none. Triumph! is well balanced enough that I cannot say there is a dominating army trend?
I have won and seen people win with what might be considered ridiculous armies in other systems but work just fine in Triumph! For example any one who has had their powerful cavalry face a mass of cheap bow levy will attest to the fact that you can get your butt handed to you real quick. I dare anyone to face the terror of DK's rabble storm coming through the rough terrain to wrap your line and overwhelm your massed heavy foot with shear numbers.
Now many armies have more options, but I cannot honestly think of a single dominant army. I can think of troop types I like to have available, but not a specific always works army.
That said I have lot's of favorite armies, but usually picked based on play style, I like high mobility, it does not always win (see bow levy comment above) but it suits my play style. Love Cataphracts, because they look cool, but they are expensive and slow, and need space to deploy. Love armies with knights and skirmisher options (yes knights work well with skirmisher support - think Alexander the great with the mixed light foot running along side).
So my suggestion pick armies based on cool factor that you like and learn how to play that army vs. multiple opponents.
