Chariot contests

Greetings one and all,

Testing out my skill (or lack thereof) with a chariot battle featuring NKE and Hittites.

Am finding that chariot contests tend to "go back and forth," a bit like the elite foot instructional video offered on the Triumph youtube channel.

Want to make sure that I am getting this right, or at least in the right general area . . .

Chariots cannot shoot at one another. Evidently, this is abstracted as part of the melee phase.

Chariots fight each other at +3 factor, so basically 0 or even. Looking over the results tables, it appears that a Fall Back will most often occur, unless the chariots are fighting any foot except archers, etc. In this case, they will Evade, which might take them well out of command reach.

Unless they score double against their opponent, chariots will not pursue, correct?

Oh yes, being open order formations, chariots getting a Fall Back result can push back friendly units just behind them, as long as those supports are also open order and facing in same direction, right?

Thanks in advance to those with more experience in driving chariots across the table.

Chris

All units can push back units aligned behind them, but if they are open order then the Chariots pass through them and retire behind an open order unit. They push back close order units.

The rest of your analysis is correct, Chariots in an even fight will tend to push and shove (not quite as bad as heavy foot, but average +3). They rely on infantry support or longer lines to wheel around and wrap enemy flanks.

Or on having support infantry in place to take over the combat on a double overlapped victor.

Many thanks for the clarification. The mistaken interpretation has not severely impacted the ongoing contest.

Will be sure to have those "beaten" chariots pass through open order friends.

Cheers,
Chris
