...a battle of 2 feudal German princes; Ottokar II of Bohemia against Rudolf of Habsburg on the Marchfeld 1278. Ottokars army; 3 heavy foot on the left, the knight on the left flanking an other own knight with blue horse barding & red-white-stripe barding as an outcome move. Rudolfs army with the horse bow attacking from behind with a own knight attacing in the flank & an other knight with the skirmishers in the front as an outcome move. My question is: who is the main attacker?..

The active player chooses the order and the attacker when there is no front contact priority.

So if I understand correctly you have an enemy knight and horsebow on the flank and the rear and the owner of those units turn, it can be either as the attack roll, the other provides a -1 overlap.

So in this case use the knight +4 vs. mounted, the enemy knight would be -1 for hit in flank by attacker and -1 for the enemy horsebow in the rear so +2

If you used the horsebow +3 vs mounted, the enemy knight would be -1 hit in the rear, and -1 for flank overlap so +2 so his factors do not change.

As Rod says -- if there is no front combatant, then the active player chooses who fights.

That means the answer boils down to this: "whose turn is it?"

See Diagram F.5.c in the rules (page 57).

The rules that apply are 64.4 and 65.3: 65.3 says "you gotta fight to your front if you've got an enemy there" and 64.4 says "active player chooses who fights". So in combination, they say (essentially): "if you've got an enemy front-to-front, you fight him; if not, active player decides who will fight"
