Couple of quick questions —
Gentlemen Experts, Apologies if these questions/topics have been covered before . . . I am in the early stages of a largish contest (historical fiction) and, 1. Can an engaged unit have a negative combat modifier? For example, a unit of Javelin Cavalry is attacked by a unit of Bad Horse. The Javelin...

Re: Alone Against Rome - some Campaign ideas and thoughts
Thanks for the info on the professor's new book. He is a prolific writer, is he not? I enjoyed others by him, so may be looking out for this newest effort. Unlike the academic's work, I was not able to finish the intended campaign, even though the combined reports would have come in very much under ...

Re: A Solo Wargamer's "World Cup" - with TRIUMPH!
Cheers Bill, Given the choice, I would take modesty over being immodest every time. :) Agreed. It seems universal that all ancient wargaming rules have to make compromises for the sake of playability, for the game. Finding that balance between historical accuracy and fun on the tabletop is vexing. (...

Re: A Solo Wargamer's "World Cup" - with TRIUMPH!
Hi Bill, Agreed, Were it not for the roll of the army selection dice, I would have never know of the Suren Indo-Parthian list either. As for the implications, well . . . I am not sure if I am the best resource or judge. Horse Bow, at least in numbers, seems to be pretty effective at attacking an ene...

Alone Against Rome - some Campaign ideas and thoughts
Gentlemen, On this rainy Sunday afternoon (at least in this location and time zone), I present for your reading engagement (or not), the first of a planned three-part project. It seemed that this first part fit best in this forum. Parts 2 and 3, when finished, will be placed (notification made) in t...

A Solo Wargamer's "World Cup" - with TRIUMPH!
Gentlemen, A solo tournament, inspired by the recent World Cup, was put together and played. Following, please see the “Reader’s Digest” version of match listings for the Round of 16 and subsequent contests. (Pool Play, using 32 armies, seemed overly ambitious if not impractical.) Game 1 Sogdians vs...

Re: Bits & Bobs
DK (and perhaps Rod as well, as I reference Alexander’s battles against Darius III), A delayed and unformatted or reviewed reply . . . Looking over the chapter on Magnesia in Professor Sabin’s book LOST BATTLES, I found this on page 199: “Livy (XXXVII.41-2) described Eumenes panicking the scythed ch...

Re: Bits & Bobs
DK, Not sure of the problem here, as the link to LIvy allows one to click arrows so as to go forwards and backwards in the narrative account, but here are the sections or chapters that I think apply to the vexing challenge of modeling scythed chariots, generally, on an ancient battlefield: http://ww...
