Longer answer: Basing matters for the amount of distance they fall back and having enough room to fall back. The basing standards are meant to be guidelines so when meeting other players your armies are more immediately identifiable. If you have 3 to a 15mm deep stand (assuming 15mm on 40mm wide here) to represent heavy foot and 4 to represent elite, I see no real issue with that. Raiders 4 to a 20mm deep ...

It was interesting at Historicon, the most popular demo board was the Viking Vs. Saxon Shieldwall battle.

I think their were people playing it pretty much all weekend.
