Re: Meshwesh Keywords and Search Terms

I have no idea what transliterations turns pinyin Jin into "Tsin" in the Spring and Autumn list and "Ts'in" in the Three Kingdoms and Western Ts'in lists, but wargamers might be looking for them under those spellings. Turns out that "Tsin" represents the École Française d'Extreme Orient system. Mor...

Re: Meshwesh Keywords and Search Terms

"Arab" should perhaps find the Abbasid lists. It does already find the Umayyad one, because that one's called "Umayyad Arab". There's a variety of latter Middle Eastern lists that arguably too should be found by that term, e.g. Caliphate of Baghdad. For newbie-friendliness, maybe "Saracen" should fi...

Re: Meshwesh minor errors and typos

The "Early Abassid" list should be "Early Abbasid".

Re: Polybian Roman

I had been concerned that Andreas' 171BC Kallinikos (Macedonian cavalry and Cretans/archers intermixed) was an exception as Macedonian cavalry are rated as Knights in their earlier period, but by the Hellenistic period the Mac Cav are Javelin Cavalry, so that's not a problem. What's troubling on th...

Re: Polybian Roman

Re training, the Constitution of the Athenians has hamippos as a position you get paid for (and can be dismissed from if the Boulê doesn't think you're fit for service). Clearly this would be unnecessary if just any light infantry could be usefully employed as hamippoi when the occasion called for i...

Re: Polybian Roman

Andreas, the only Cretan mercenaries I'm familiar with in the Greek Classical and Hellenistic period are their famous skirmishing bowmen -- does your Kallinikos source say anything about the equipment of these Cretans? Livy mentions the infantry of both side using swords to chop off cavalry lances ...

Re: Polybian Roman

Oh, and another quote relevant to both intermixing foot and horse and pre-Pyrrhic cavalry shields: Alexander saw only a few of the enemy still occupying a ridge, along which lay his route, he ordered his body-guards and the companions around him to take their shields, mount their horses, and ride to...

Re: Polybian Roman

A search for "hamippoi" on the SoA forums turned up a couple things of relevance: Cotys [sc. a Thracian king allied with Macedon] commanded the left wing with the whole of his native troops, the light infantry being disposed between the ranks of the cavalry. On the right were the Macedonian cavalry,...

Re: Meshwesh minor errors and typos

Speaking of the Warring States, there seems to be a major gap in coverage of the 3rd century - there's a list for Qin and one for Zhao or Chu, but seemingly none for the other states (principally Han, Wei, Yan, and Qi, but some minor states also survived well beyond 307 BC). ETA: When I look at it a...

Re: Polybian Roman

I was assuming you'd pay for the stands you actually field, so if you replace a Jav Cav and a Rabble with 2x Jav Cav, you pay the full eight points for them. Should probably be explicitly stated on the card if the suggestion is adopted. The advantage in game terms is that you can get more mounted th...
