Re: Polybian Roman
How dare you accuse me of being anything but serious about playing with toy soldiers! My suggestion of course assumes ( contra Mr Barker) that cavalry with intermixed infantry deploys on a wider front than the same number of cavalry would on their own. This is making excrement up, strictly speaking,...

Re: Polybian Roman
How about this for effect: " Hamippoi, 0 pts: For every Javelin Cavalry stand in the army, you may replace a stand of Rabble or Light Foot with another Javelin Cavalry stand, and for each Bad Horse stand you may similarly replace a Rabble or Light Foot stand with another Bad Horse stand. Both the or...

Camillan Roman
The discussion of Polybian Romans got me looking at the Camillan list, which has triarii and hastati as Elite foot, while the principes are lumped Latins and raw recruits as Heavy Foot. What did they principes do to be classed as worse than the hastati?

Re: Polybian Roman
I should also have mentioned that Thucydides' hamippoi are Boiotian. When battle (1st Mantineia) is eventually joined after much manoeuvre and diplomacy, the Boiotians are no longer present, and we anyway don't hear about what any cavalry did in the battle. (All translators presume they were combata...

Re: Polybian Roman
Greek Hamippoi and Germanic light infantry are noted as fighting in close cooperation with cavalry, even intermixing with them, but not, AFAIK, as hitching a ride. Thucydides 5.57.2 mentions hamippoi ; oddly, most online translations render this as "dismounted troopers", but this is probably an exam...

Re: Battle Cards
OK, having googled a bit more and had a chat with Duncan over at the SoA forums, I've gathered the following: Herodian appears to be the only source. His wording is compatible with either armoured or unarmoured camels. Duncan feels that the wording suggests armoured beasts - I'm more inclined to thi...

Re: Battle Cards
Hatra would be Arabo-Aramean, yes. Ca AD 200 it was an Arsacid vassal.
I'll look and ask around a bit if there's any other sources with more detail when time permits.

Palmyran cataphract camels Palmyran cataphract camels? Is that a slip for Hatrene (the WRG identification), or is there reason to ascribe the things to Palmyra too? A very brief look round the 'Net - and I don't have time for anything else ATM - leaves me with a terrible suspicion the whole thing m...
