So far I would say nobody has been overly concerned about basing depths if you have troops mounted slightly different. Where it really matters in terms of more competitive play is when something "bad" would have happened had your troops been on the proper depth. Easiest example would be a fall back ...

Well it's not a legal size piece of terrain
It's about 2 feet long and 1 foot wide...
I tend to build things like this in 6mm ish scale as a distant back drop for the battle... Here is a picture part way through with a 15mm fig for scale.

Thanks Gregorious... not sure I will get time soon to do a tutorial anytime soon due to a hectic schedule but happy to answer questions. Another option is the tea light smoke effects we use for Bolt Action to mark knocked out vehicles.
The tea lights blink and give a pretty good impression of a burning vehicle with the appropriately painted stuffing.
