Generally speaking I think this depends on the river. If a river becomes too big of an obstacle, then it will not be part of a battle since the army will not choose to cross it in the face of the enemy. I am working on a new set of scenarios for publication, two of them involve river crossing battle...

Local Grocery store sells it (with some paperwork). It is perfectly safe if handled properly. I used it for a Science demo in my kids class. Just make sure you have some thick gloves. One issue with making it more friendly is that it takes away the inherent danger of getting caught in a column and hit in the flank

It takes some getting used to the idea of the corner swap. Just try the front corner in contact must be switched with the other front corner and try it in a few configurations. It will start to click.

The warriors would die, if they cannot turn they are destroyed. This is frequently the penalty when the head of a column is hit in the flank. Not enough armies qualify for this troop type to make it a troop type, similar to camels. It simplifies the troop type chart.
