Re: Early Achaemenid cavalry

The place to look for cheaper copies is http://www.bookfinder.com but currently they don't have a copy for much less than $100. I know that shielded horsemen would be unusual for the time, and taken at face value Herodotus is saying they have the same shields as the infantry - are we to imagine cava...

Re: Tibetan

Regarding cataphracts, this paper is really about the Tibetan army of the 18-20th centuries, but it has a few words to say in passing about earlier days. In particular, it says that cataphract armour was abandoned (for practical military use as opposed to religious pageantry) in the 17th century, du...

Vedic Chariotry

The Vedic Indian list has:
Chariots
2-wheeled mobile battle platforms with champions who dismount to fight on foot
The second line sounds like the definition of Battle Taxi, so either the troop type or the explanation may need correction. (I disclaim all knowledge about which is right.)

Re: Meshwesh Keywords and Search Terms

Which other poleis would appear often enough to be worth putting in search terms? Corinth, Argos/Argive, Syracuse/Syracusan, ... any others? (Thessaly, Athens, Thebes, Sparta, and several others are already in separated-out lists) I'm not sure I want to put in 100 micro-poleis names here as search ...

Re: Early Achaemenid cavalry

Re Herodotus, VII:61-62 tells us that the Persians and Medes (by implication the infantry) in Xerxes' army had wicker shields*, bows, and spears; VII:64 tells us the Bactrians had spears and bows. VII:84 then tells us that the Persian cavalry was equipped like their foot, and VII:86 tells us the sam...

Re: Meshwesh Keywords and Search Terms

It'd be nice if "Spartan" brought up some variant of Early Hoplite Greek. Undoubtedly analogously for various other poleis.

Shooting

Unless we're missing something, the Early Access edition has no requirement for elements to to shoot back if shot at, if able. Correct? Playing a game with two shooty armies on Saturday, we found the shooting rules vague on a number of points: When do you declare targets? Does all shooting have to b...

Early Achaemenid cavalry

The Early Achaemenid list has "Persian, Median, Bactrian or similar horsemen" classed as Jav Cav. Acc'd Herodotus, the Persians and Medes had bow, spear and shield, and the Bactrians had bows and spears (cf also Duncan Head's The Achaemenid Persian Army ). So why aren't they Elite Cav or Horse Bow? ...
