Dudes throwing rocks

Post by David Kuijt » Sun Jun 25, 2017 8:17 pm

The Early Swiss get 0-2 stands of Rabble that are their own version of the Suicide Squad: dudes throwing rocks. They're called enfants perdus, which means lost boys, and in context means something like forlorn hope or "these guys are doomed."

I know I've got some figs somewhere that are dudes throwing rocks, but Mount Neverpaint is huge and I haven't been able to find them.

Plate E of Osprey Elite 7 (The Ancient Greeks) has psiloi throwing rocks (from vase paintings -- the plate represents Demosthenes' failed expedition to Aetolia).

Thracians apparently have some sort of rock-throwing dudes.

There is a stand of women throwing rocks in the Horn of Africa army, I believe.

So anyway, the question is this -- anyone know figures that would work for Early Swiss lost boys? I've looked over Essex in some detail and found nothing; ditto for Old Glory.

I searched Black Hat, Donnington, Magister Militum and Khurasan. All were the usual array of peasants with improvised weapons EXCEPT for Khurasan in their Crusade Range. The issue is there is only one rock thrower pose and the packs are random. He is a cooperative guy so you might swing a deal just for the rock throwers. Another option is Wargamer. PL. I have their Cossack and Polish peasants and their are several rock throwers in there. If you are into swapping some heads, they may work as well. That's all I could find for now. Happy hunting.

Are you open to simple conversions? Slingers might work with a bit of trimming.

Any references for what type of medieval clothing you'd prefer?

Conversions are easy enough with Essex soft lead (they suck on Falcon or Xyston). Xyston has psiloi (Greek skirmishers) with open hands; many of those allow easy rock additions. But since I'm painting up a double army (one for me and one for DS) I'll need like 12 figs, which is too much for head swaps.

The Early Swiss go from 1280 or so to 1425, so anything vaguely tunic and trews would be fine, with a hood being a bonus. Tunic and bare legs is also okay. Knee length tunic is better than the mid-thigh that some Greeky figures get, but that's being a little fussy. Long sleeve tunic also better than short sleeve, which is more Viking period or Hellenistic.

Did you look at the Khurasan figure? Issues?

No issues -- it looks good. For Rabble I can't use more than one of that pose per stand without looking regimented and dorky, though. However, they've got two Swiss figs (in their Early Swiss range) throwing rocks (holding a Halberd in their other hand). For 12 figs I still want more variety if I can get it, of course.

Here are front and back pictures to take a look at with some rough trimming and a black wash.

-In order left to right on the photo facing front:
-Norman staff slinger 1 and 2 (ready to throw)
-Scot with a 'diaper and hoodie and hose' medieval look
-Sassanid slinger, nice throwing pose, a skull cap
-Viking Slinger, I bent the arms
-Viking slinger, untouched to show original pose.

Those look good, Bill. The Scot, Sassanid, and bent-arm Viking Slinger are perfect.

Is it possible that you can just tape those three to a 3x5 card, pop them in an envelope, and mail them to me? Bringing them to Historicon won't serve because I need to have the army finished already then for Tim or Wendy Myers (forget which) to borrow for the Sharp Johnny Campaign Theme.
